Why is my credit score important?

Your credit score is more important than you might think. It may determine where you live and in what kind of house. It could limit the type of carl you buy and drive and even the schools that you are able to send your children to or attend yourself.

Your credit score is one of the most important factors that a lender uses to determine how much credit you can receive and at what cost or interest rate to grant it at. Generally speaking the higher your credit score the better off you will be.

Lenders take into consideration other factors: job history, your income, your savings, mortgage information and your actual credit report. They may even take into consideration any special reasons for past credit problems.

What is a good score?

While planning a major purchase, you should check both your credit report and credit score several months prior to making the purchase. Make sure the information in your credit report is accurate, as this will affect your score. Credit scores above 650 usually qualify you for credit (although there are programs for people with lower credit). Below 650, you may have trouble receiving credit and the programs available to you and the interest rate will be more limited.

Can I fix my poor credit score?

Absolutely! We have one person that had two foreclosures on his credit and working with a credit repair specialist was able to get his score over 700 in less than two years. There are may things that can be done to improve your score through credit repair.

What can I do to improve my credit score?

    Pay bills on time!
Late payments, collections, and bankruptcies will have the greatest negative effect on your credit score. Being punctual is extremely important. If you fall behind on your payments due to family problems, or illness you will need to keep your creditors informed.

    Check your credit report!!
Make sure that information is accurate. Request a copy of your credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 1-877-322-8228. If you have poor credit, immediately start taking steps to repair your credit.

Don't open credit accounts you don't need!
Opening unneeded accounts will lower your credit score, especially if you open several in a short period of time. Generally it is good to have just a few credit cards not one for every special offer at the credit department of your favorite store.

Keep credit balances as low as possible!
Balances over 50% of the credit limit will lower your score. Ideally balances should be less than 30% of your credit limit. It is better to pay off debt rather than just moving it around.

Don't make too many inquiries on your credit report!
A large number of enquiries may lower your score. Don't apply for a large number of credit cards in a short period of time.

    Be patient!
The best fix is not necessarily a quick fix. Some things can be done fairly quickly but most credit repair takes place over time. The history is as important as the score.
